We have potential customers call all the time wanting to get a Siberian husky puppy and telling us they have a huge yard and plan on using an invisible fence to keep the husky in the yard. Will an invisible fence work on a husky? That will depend on many factors and I decided to write this article to inform you so you could really give it a lot of thought before you decide. If you ask any invisible fence company they will highly recommend them for any dog and huskies too. You can find a lot of people telling you they own a husky and it keeps them in the yard without any problems. What you really need to know is where do they live and what are their surroundings like? How much did they train the dog with the fence?
Knowing your surroundings if you plan on using an invisible fence
Before you decide to use an invisible fence for your husky, you need to know and think about where you live. Do you live where there are plenty of wildlife in the surrounding area? Huskies are notorious for chasing after small prey and they love to go after deer. An invisible fence is not going to keep a husky contained if it sees a deer or other small animals it considers prey. It will just be a matter of time before your dog is gone for good. I know because we talk to people who has used the fence and are now looking to buy another husky because theirs got lost or ran over by a car. I have used and tested the fence on other breeds I had and they were about 90% effective. The other 10% of the time they ended up in our back yard that has a privacy fence all the way around it so they were still safe. If I didn’t have the privacy fence I would have lost them more than likely. Is keeping your husky secure 90% of the time good enough for you?
An invisible fence might keep the dog inside the yard but it won’t keep people or wildlife out of the yard. If a stray dog or coyote came in your yard and started fighting with your dog it would be forced to fight and maybe to the death if it could not get away. That’s provided your husky is trained so well that no matter it won’t leave the yard and I would be reluctant that it wouldn’t under these circumstances. A lot of damage will be done in a short amount of time when 2 dogs fight. Does your neighbor keep his dogs up to date on shots because if they run loose they will be in your yard exposing your dog to whatever they may have. Strangers can walk right up in your yard and steal your dog a lot easier if you don’t have a real fence. I have people on my waiting list right now replacing a stolen husky. Dog theft is very common these days if the dog is a purebred.
An invisible fence is a not turn it on and you’re done kind of system
If you get in invisible fence you can’t just have it installed and then turn it on and think your husky is going to stay in the yard. This can be a misconception and you will not like the outcome if this is how you use this system. Once you have the fence installed you have to train your dog to stay within the boundaries of the yard. The only thing that is going to keep your dog inside the yard is the training not the shock. How confident are you going to be that your dog is trained well enough to stay inside the yard no matter what is going on outside the fence boundaries? Do you even have time to train and test the dog with the fence? The test can’t be let’s see if he gets out while I am at work because chances are he will and he may be ran over or stolen by the time you get home.
The safest way to use an invisible fence with your husky
If I was going to use an invisible fence so my dog could take advantage of a huge yard I would have it installed around the boundary of my yard so the husky could have a huge area to run and play with the family. I would start training it as a puppy to learn the boundaries but I would have a kennel for the dog when I was not at home. Keeping the dog safe in a kennel when I was not at home and letting the dog out every day when I was at home would be the safest way to use an invisible fence. On weekends when you are home to watch the dog he could be out all day long playing and enjoying the family. We have a customer who using an invisible fence with her 2 huskies but they are inside dogs. She lets them out to potty and is always watching them while they are outside. Once the play time is over they come back in the house with her. That has worked well for her as she had one that lived a full life using the fence in this manor.
Will An Invisible Fence Work For A Husky?
I would recommend the invisible fence if it was used in these type of situations but I would never trust an invisible fence to keep my huskies in the yard 24 hours a day. The fence may work in the beginning and it might work for a couple of years but I can promise you it won’t work at some point and it may have a very bad ending. Siberian huskies are wonderful dogs but they have a high desire for adventure and a little shock won’t stop that in the end. If you decide to get a husky make sure you can secure it with a traditional fence for it’s own safety or combine the invisible fence with a kennel.
