Getting your new husky puppy home was fun and exciting. He loves to play with you and follows you everywhere. But soon after the puppy settles in it’s new home, it starts biting you every time you touch it. Sound familiar? Huskies although not vicious by any stretch, are known to nip and bite at their owners. You need to put an end to this before it becomes a bad habit. Yes it starts out to be a really cute thing when it’s just a puppy, but imagine that puppy weighing 60-80 pounds and still nipping and biting you! It won’t be near as amusing or cute then. They also won’t be any fun for young kids to play with either.
You need to break them from this habit. Allowing them to bite your hands teaches them that it is ok to bite your skin.Never allow young puppies to do things that you will have to break them from doing later. Any habit will be hard to break. Prevention is the best way to keep your dog from being a nipper or biter. Here are some ways to stop your husky from biting you:
1. Huskies are highly social dogs. If your puppy is exhibiting bad behavior such as nipping at you, turn away from him and stop being social or playing with him. Ignoring him is one way that works a lot of times. Also try screaming out ouch or stop. Once your puppy stops the behavior then and only then should you engage him in play again. Get a toy and try to encourage him to bite and play with the toy instead of biting you.
2. Another good method to get your husky to stop nipping at you is to get a coke can and drop some pennies in it, then put a piece of tape over the top to keep the pennies inside. When your puppy bites you just start shaking the can or dropping it near the puppy and commanding it to stop. This loud and distracting noise should startle the dog and make him stop. Just don’t drop the can on the dog or it’s foot.
3. If these 2 methods fail you may have to get a little more firm with the puppy. If your puppy bites you then grab him by his skin around his neck and give him him a gentle shake and firmly tell him no! Don’t pick the puppy up and shake him or shovel him backwards. You want him to understand that biting hurts you and at the same time you don’t want him scared of you, otherwise your not going to teach him anything other than your scary and avoid you at all cost.
A puppy is going to bite and nip, that’s what puppies do however, it is important to get your puppy out of this bad habit as soon as possible. An adult dog biting and nipping on you will get annoying really fast and it will really hurt too.
