Why Should I Train my Husky?

why train your huskyA happy and healthy Siberian husky is a wonderful dog. A bored and sad husky is a curse. So why should you train your dog? A well behaved husky gets to go more places and meet more people and do a lot of fun stuff. They are allowed to do more things for one simple reason. They obey the rules! Training your husky is not just about preforming neat tricks, the most useful training is obedience. This will not only get your dog out more but it will keep him safe.

One of the first things we train our huskies about are gates and doors. We train them to sit by gates and doors and wait until we invite them to go through them. This really comes in handy if they are running loose in the back yard and you open the door. It’s not a good experience to open the door and get bull rushed having dogs dart through your legs to enter the house. This also keeps them safe when you open a gate in the yard to enter or exit. The last thing you would want is for a husky to run out in the road and be hit by a car, or some one opens the front door and your dog rushes out. A husky gets very excited once they get loose and they can be hard to catch. If you chase them they think it’s a fun game and they may run even faster.

Huskies were breed to be a working dog. Today most people buy them for pets and companionship. Leaving a husky laying on the couch all day bored and alone is going to get him into trouble (chewing or barking) and could result in a weight problem. Training your husky will keep him active and healthy. Your dog will also bond better with you when you do activities with him. You will become close friends understanding each other better. Your dog will learn what you want him to do and how to do it over time.

Training builds confidence and gives your dog something to do. Always make training a fun experience for your husky. Don’t ever yell and scream at them because they aren’t doing what you want them to do right away. It can take some time and lots of patients but if you keep repeating the training they will get it. Every dog learns and executes their training at different speeds just like humans. Keep the training interesting and fun for the dog. If you think about it, there are many more reasons to train your husky and a lot of them will come in handy sooner or later.
