All puppies are chewers. They chew when they are young puppies because they are teething. They continue to chew as they get older because they are bored and have the habit of chewing stuff. Some dogs will stop as they mature while others won’t. In other words every dog is different and will have it’s own reason for doing what it does. That can get aggravating and expensive if your husky is chewing your chair leg or coffee table. Most of this happens because of habit and boredom as it gets older.
There are quite a few products out on the market you can buy and spray on your furniture to stop dogs from chewing. These products work to deter a dog from chewing because the stuff tastes bad. Some of these products will harm your furniture and leave a stain. I use products called Yulk and Bitter Apple. When sprayed on your hands it will help in keeping your puppy from biting you. One problem with a lot of these store bought products is the lack to stand up to the elements outside. Once it rains you have to re-apply to outside items you’re trying to protect. That can get costly during the spring and other rainy seasons. I came up with a home made remedy to stop huskies from chewing your wood products and everything else. Here is all you need:
1 jar of Vaseline and some red pepper spice. You can use Petroleum jelly it really doesn’t matter as they are the same thing. Take the Vaseline and put it on a paper plate. Smear it out a bit and start dusting it with red pepper. Then take a toothpick and stir it up. Repeat this several times until you get a nice red color to the Vaseline. Then by hand or latex glove, apply a thin coat to whatever you’re trying to protect from the dog. I don’t advise putting it on cloth or carpets. This won’t wash off when it rains if you’re using it outside. I apply it to wood posts in our kennel, porches, and decks. I also use it on plastic furniture. The dogs don’t like the taste and will avoid chewing whatever you apply it to. It’s that simple. Sooner or later you will need to re-apply but it won’t be for a long time compared to every other day with the store bought stuff. This is just an aid to help change the behavior of your dog and you will still need to work with them and tell them no.
For inside your home where Vaseline may not work well or stain you can use this as it works really well without making a mess.
