We are often asked “can a husky live in a warmer climate?” The answer is yes. A Siberian husky can adopt to just about any climate. Huskies are found all over the world, from Russia to the deep South and even in Africa. Ideally if you’re moving to a warmer climate and have not bought a Siberian yet then it would be a good idea to wait and buy one from a breeder who has been raising them in a warm climate. If you’re moving from a colder climate with your husky to the South it will adjust. Just make sure it has plenty of water and shade and access to some air conditioning or fan in the hottest parts of the summer days. Just like you, it will be a little bit of a culture shock at first so make your dog as comfortable in the transition as possible.
Make sure you keep your huskies coat brushed especially during the summer and when your dog is blowing it’s coat. Huskies blow or shed their undercoat about twice a year. You will know it when it starts to happen. Every time you pet the dog it will leave your hand covered with hair. During this time brush your dogs coat every day with a good dog brush. Doing these simple things will add great comfort to your dog during those hot summer days. If you have a place to put a small kiddy pool then get one for your husky. Siberian Huskies love to play in water and it will help keep them cool. Nick in the pic above loves to swim in our pool all during the day to keep cool. There is a down side to allowing your huskies to use your pool. They get in and out of the pool constantly tracking dirt into your pool. You will have to vacuum more often but you will have a happy husky who is living just fine in a warmer climate.
