Siberian huskies are wonderful pets but like all things it comes with a price. To truly have a happy husky you should spend a lot of time each day to bond and play with your dog. It’s called living the husky life style. Exercise is key to having a happy husky dog. I get calls from people all over the country that have different issues going on with their dog. Although they didn’t buy a “Bama Husky” I am always interested in trying to help anyone I can. It’s good for them and especially good for the dog if the problem can be resolved.
Since I am a dedicated breeder I own quite a few of them. Managing a husky kennel is a full time job for me. Most people that know me think I am living an easy life. Just feed once a day and set under the air conditioner the whole day and take naps. Then wait for the puppies to roll in. I sure wish it was that simple some times but it never has been nor will it ever be.
My day starts around 6 am every morning. I get up and go let my guard dogs out of the main kennel area. Then I start getting each dog out for their morning walk. We go out on our farm outside the kennel grounds and circle back around the pond before we go back to the kennels. Our dogs love to jump in the pond and chase a few bullfrogs, then take a little swim. The trail is about 2 miles. The dogs love it and they expect it every day. I usually finish up about 8 am. Then I have to get the little ones feed. Then it’s time to check the water buckets and clean out the kennels. Guess what, it’s now time for lunch.
If it is hot the dogs are already out running around and swimming. Well one group at a time anyway. Having a large sum of dogs mean that some are not compatible to play or get along so we split up into groups that are. This is when I usually get my first bite to eat for the day. I call it brunch. I usually get about an hour to myself at this point.
The evening is a little laid back until feeding time. The dogs will have been in and out of their kennels a few times depending on what is going on that day. I never allow them out to play unless I am right there watching over them so the evening time is watching and throwing balls for them and giving lots of love. Some days we have to throw in grooming as well.
Saturdays consists of these things but add water bucket cleaning and food bowl cleaning to the list of things to do. Plus we can get busy with private kennel tours on Saturdays and Sundays along with the regular things. I do have my wonderful wife to work with on weekends which is nice. There are still other special things we add to this list of daily activities at certain times of the month like complete kennel chip removal. Once a month we scape out all the wood chips and start over with fresh new chips. That is done for 12 kennels and a 70 foot hallway. We also sanitize all the dog houses once a month or sooner if needed. Quitting time is usually 7:30 every night. I do this 7 days a week.
My favorite time is when we have new puppies. That means a lot of extra work added to the daily list but it is worth every effort. We are always very excited to have new puppies around here. If you are having a bad day just one look from a cute husky puppy can fix just about anything. Playing with them is such a joy. It’s always a little sad to see them leave with their new family but seeing the excitement on peoples faces when they come to pick up the puppy is such a wonderful sight to see. It kinda gives meaning to all the hard work and dedication we give all of our dogs. I have lived a lot of ways but the husky life is definitely the best.
