Huskies Playing Fetch In The Pool

One of our past times here at the Kennel during these hot summer days is watching our huskies playing fetch in the pool. (see video above) They love to jump in and go get their toys and bring them back to the ladder. I wish I could say I was a top dog trainer and say check out my video of how I learned them to play fetch not only the traditional way, but we stepped it up a notch and trained them to also fetch in the water. Of coarse nothing could be further from the truth. Training a Husky can be challenging depending on what your trying to train it to do and how interested the husky is in learning what your trying to teach it.

I have been asked “how did you train your dogs to fetch in the pool”. Fortunately for us these dogs love the water as most huskies do, and they love toys. So, putting them together was as easy as throwing the toy in the water and watching them take action. The real trick is keeping them interested in fetching the toys. If you do this too much they will stop being interested in your game. It’s just as much fun for us to watch as it is for them to fetch. We try to limit this game of fetch to about 10 minutes each afternoon or even every other day at times. Once they stop being excited about one toy, we just swap it out for a different toy, or even a new toy and they will go right back to fetching for us.

To keep your dog playing games with you:

  • Don’t be too repetitive with any one game
  • Change out the toys often
  • Make the game interesting to the dog

If your dog hasn’t shown interest in playing games with you, maybe you should try some of these tips, they might just work for you. One last tip you could try is hiding treats in his favorite toy. He will definitely become interested in the toy and you can use this interest to start a game with him. It’s not rocket science but every dog is different, you will have to figure out what motivates your dog and use that to get him to play games with you.

Here are some good toys for your dog.

Just make sure your dog is not chewing off small pieces and swallowing them which could cause an intestine blockage. Most dogs won’t but every dog is different.
