That is a good question and everyone who has decided to buy a new husky puppy needs to consider not only the cost for the puppy, but how much will it cost yearly to own a husky. The good news is a husky won’t cost anymore to keep and maintain than any other normal dog. All dogs come with a maintenance price tag. So how much is that? Let’s break it down and see. Some people will pay more or less as this is just an average cost that I experience with my dogs, yours may vary. A vet out in the country where we live will usually be somewhat cheaper than a big city animal clinic. It’s all about location.
Cost of husky puppy
600.00 to 850 dollars. You can find them cheaper on free pet sites, Craigs list, or even your local paper. Buyer beware! I just had a lady call me a few days ago looking to buy a husky puppy from us. Our list was pretty full and I wasn’t sure I could take on another deposit. Her story is that she bought one for her sister off of Craigs list. It died a couple of weeks after arriving at her home. She had taken it to her vet because it got sick only to discover it had Parvo. She stated that she believed it was sold to her that way and she is going to be correct.
Then she contacted the seller to get her money back or a replacement puppy, but they wouldn’t answer her emails. That’s typical since the buyer wasn’t a breeder. They got their money so the deal was done. She lost 300 dollars on this venture. Yes it was cheaper than what a reputable breeder will charge but in the end she will have 300.00 more invested in a husky puppy than she would have had if she had dealt with a breeder to start with. These free puppy classifieds are full of scams. You will be lucky to even get your puppy from them and when you do you could be bringing a diseased dog home. If you have other dogs this could threaten the life of those dogs. Some people have good luck buying puppies from these sites but that is the risk you will be facing.
How much does it cost to feed a Siberian husky each year? 400.00.
The cost here will depend on what brand of food you buy for your husky. Some are very expensive. Whatever you decide to feed your dog don’t buy some garbage low budget junk for your dog. Your dog is an investment and you need to take good care of your investment. Not only is it an investment but it is also a lifetime companion and friend. Low priced dog food is full of corn. Your dog doesn’t need a corn based dog food. It’s not a cow it’s a dog and needs meat and veggies designed for dogs digestive systems.
Cost of vet bills for one year.
If your dog has no health issues and everything goes smoothly you can expect to pay around 250.00 per year on vet check ups, yearly shots, de-wormer, flea protection, and heart worm prevention. Keep in mind that things do come up that you just can’t predict and that will add to the cost. You should get your dog spayed or nurtured which will add an additional 100 dollars expense to your first year.
Toys and snacks.
You will want to buy toys for your puppy. You can get these cheap but the cheaper ones usually don’t last long. I spend about 50 dollars a year on toys for one dog. Snacks are not necessary but who don’t buy their dog snacks? Once you see how much they love them you just can’t stop buying them or feeding them treats. They are great motivational tools to get your husky to work for the food. Snacks for a year cost about 200 dollars. You can cut that down but then where is the fun in that. You buy a husky to have an active dog that loves to play with you so snacks are a big part of the fun as well as the toys. Just like all kids they get tired of the same old toys so that is why you buy more toys. Keep them put up so they don’t get bored with all the toys at once.
Vitamins are essential to keep your husky healthy and happy.
Cost varies but we spend about 100 dollars a year for each dog. So if your puppy stays healthy and you just use the average priced foods and snacks your average cost to own a Siberian husky for each year is going to be around 1,000 dollars a year. Keep in mind that as a dog gets older it could need special diets or other things that could increase the yearly cost. Dogs can be expensive to own and maintain so it’s something you should think about before you go out and buy one. If you can afford a husky and love to stay active then your in for a great time.
