What Can I Do About An Extremely Hyper Husky?

husky puppiesAll dogs are not created equal. Especially when it comes to Huskies and the word  is hyperactive dog ! I see a lot of Husky owners asking these questions quite frequently and they are always new puppy owners. Some are astonished by the energy a Husky puppy can have. Some are less hyperactive than others, but they all have high levels of energy. Some owners walk their dog trying to burn some of that energy off and others talk about how wild their dogs are when they are inside the house. Understand your dog is normal because it’s a Husky thing. Here are some tips to help you with your hyperactive Husky:

  • Huskies naturally have a lot of energy and they need to be walked and mentally challenged daily. Letting your Husky out of it’s kennel each day to walk around the back yard won’t be enough. You should take your dog for a nice long walk. It will be good for the dog and good for you too. If you just don’t have the time to walk your dog it would be a good ideal to hire a dog walker or even take your dog to doggy daycare when your at work.
  • Work on training your dog. A Husky is eager and willing to learn from you but you have to be willing to teach. This will challenge your Husky mentally.
  • Always stay calm when working with your Husky. They can be difficult but if you get excited or mad they will pick up on this and it will just make everything worse.
  • Play Games with your dog. Mentally challenge your dog with food treats. There are many different toys you can buy and hide a treat in to make your dog work for his treats. When they figure out how to get the treats quickly, it’s time to change the game up and make it more challenging. You could put the treat in a toy and stuff it inside another toy. One of the easiest games we play with our Huskies is to throw the treats and making the dogs hunt them down. Pitch some high in the air and watch them jump and catch them. Very simple and basic but they will have a lot of fun doing it, and burn off some energy at the same time.
  • Train your Husky daily. You should work with the dog every day to be obedient and to establish yourself as the pack leader. This is more mental training your dog needs and will come in handy when you have your dog in the house.
  • Socialize your dog. Maybe you have a friend or know other people that live close by that would be interested in play dates. Dogs love to socialize with other dogs and it’s a good experience for your dog. That will help burn off a lot of energy.
