We’re thrilled to share some exciting news from our breeding program—a very special puppy, Koda, has earned not one, but two prestigious accolades from the American Kennel Club (AKC): the Good Citizen Award and the Advanced Good Community Award! These awards aren’t just ribbons to hang on a wall; they are a testament to Koda’s outstanding behavior, excellent manners, and the loving care he receives at home.

What Are These Awards?

The AKC Good Citizen Award

The AKC Good Citizen Award is designed to recognize dogs that display outstanding behavior and exemplary manners in everyday situations. It’s all about encouraging responsible pet ownership and ensuring that our canine companions are well-behaved citizens in the community. During the test, dogs are evaluated on a series of tasks—ranging from greeting strangers politely to walking calmly in a distracting environment. Passing this test means a dog can confidently navigate the world around them, demonstrating trustworthiness and a positive temperament in a variety of social settings.

The Advanced Good Community Award

Taking it a step further, the Advanced Good Community Award challenges our furry friends with more complex scenarios and a higher level of distractions. This test builds on the skills from the Good Citizen Award, focusing on more advanced obedience, controlled behavior off-leash, and the ability to perform under even more demanding circumstances. Dogs who earn this award have shown that they not only understand basic commands and social etiquette but also excel in more challenging real-world situations.

Why Did Koda Earn These Awards?

Koda isn’t your average puppy—he’s a shining example of what responsible breeding, proper training, and lots of love can achieve. Here are a few reasons why Koda stood out during the tests:

  • Gentle and Respectful: One of the first things that people notice about Koda is his gentle nature. Whether he’s taking a treat or greeting a new friend, he always approaches with calm and measured steps. For instance, when receiving a treat, he makes sure to keep a safe distance, slowly nibbling rather than snatching it—a small detail that speaks volumes about his good manners.
  • Excellent Social Skills: Koda has an innate ability to interact positively with everyone he meets. His behavior around children is especially heartwarming. As his owner proudly shares, Koda is incredibly gentle with kids—he’s even won hearts by being so good with his owner’s husband’s 2-year-old niece. Such interactions are precisely what the Good Citizen Award tests are all about.
  • Obedient and Trustworthy: It’s not every day you hear someone say they’ve taken a husky off-leash on a hike! Koda’s obedience is truly remarkable. His ability to follow commands even in a stimulating outdoor environment shows that he is well-trained and responsive, which is essential for both the awards and everyday safety.
  • Playful and Endearing Quirks: Beyond his impeccable manners, Koda’s personality is full of charm. His playful, clumsy antics—like stomping his feet on the ground or playfully placing his paw on your foot when you’re not looking—make him an absolute joy to be around. These quirks, combined with his sweet, loyal nature, make him not just a good citizen but a beloved family member.
  • Curious and Adventurous: Koda loves the great outdoors. Whether he’s exploring new trails on a hike or simply enjoying time in the backyard, his curiosity and enthusiasm for life shine through. His love for peanut butter is just the cherry on top of an already delightful personality!

What Does It Mean to Pass These Tests?

Earning the AKC Good Citizen and Advanced Good Community Awards isn’t just about checking off a list of behaviors—it’s about setting a standard for what a well-mannered, well-socialized dog should be. When a dog passes these tests, it means:

  • Confidence in Public Settings: Koda’s ability to remain calm and well-behaved in a variety of situations means he’s a joy to be around in any community setting—be it parks, pet-friendly stores, or family gatherings.
  • A Commitment to Training and Socialization: These awards reflect the hard work, consistency, and love put into Koda’s training. They signal that he’s been raised in an environment that prioritizes good behavior and positive social interactions.
  • Enhanced Safety and Enjoyment: A well-behaved dog is not only safer for themselves but also for the people around them. Koda’s awards give his family peace of mind and make him a perfect companion for adventures, big or small.
