Lets face it, we all love to give our dog some food we are eating from time to time because those puppy dog eyes are staring into your soul saying please let me have a bite of that. I am guilty and you are too unless you’re really disciplined and knew it was really bad for your dog to eat human food. Research studies have shown that one food additive found in a lot of our human food called XLITOL is very harmful for dogs. XLITOL is a natural occurring sugar substitute it is commonly found in chewing gum, a variety of mints, plants and other fruits. XLITOL has been linked to deaths in dogs and it has become more common. Dogs that ingest XLITO have symptoms of disorientation or seizures. This toxic chemical causes a dogs blood sugar to drop rapidly.
If your dog becomes weak and disoriented suddenly , you should get it to a vet immediately. You can not treat this problem at home. Keep chewing gum and mints away from your dog as they usually contain XLITOL. Kids can’t resist sharing candy with their dog so be sure if your kids are eating candy that they don’t share it with the dog. Since many foods can contain chemicals that may be harmful to your dog it is best not to get in the habit of feeding your dog human food to be safe.
