siberian husky living in apartmentIs it possible to have a happy husky while living in an apartment? The answer is yes it is possible if you are committed to doing the right things your dog needs to thrive and be happy. A Siberian husky is a highly active dog that needs a lot of exercise daily. Living in an apartment offers a challenge for you and your dog. If you consider getting a Siberian husky then you have to think about how you will be able to exercise your dog. Is there a park near by that is convenient enough that you would use it every day? Are there any local walking trails that are dog friendly? Can you just jog around the block or through the city streets with him?  Any one of these will offer a solution that will work to get your dog the exercise it needs. Where can it do it’s business? Definitely going to need a small grassy area or you will have to pad train him.

Dog protection

A lot of young college students that move away from home to go to school look to get a dog as a companion. Even more true for young ladies as a dog can benefit them in many ways. A Siberian husky is active and ready to go walking. Walking with the dog can provide some protection from strangers. Most criminals looking to target a woman would avoid confrontation with a dog. A Siberian husky is a fierce looking wolf dog. Although they are not guard dogs nor part wolf and they usually never bite people, but they do look the part. They do however make great watch dogs. If your husky is home alone in the apartment he would bark and make enough noise to keep a burglar from breaking in and stealing your stuff. That would also be true if you were home asleep at night. Huskies have great awareness and stay on alert. Just some great reasons to have a husky living in your apartment.

It can also be challenging to find an apartment willing to allow a large dog. Some apartments have a size limit while others do not allow any pets. Then you have to consider the pet fee or rent prices for apartments that do allow pets. Can you afford the extra cost? Does it put you at an inconvenient location?

Down town dogging around

Did you know there are a lot of places in town that are dog friendly? The most obvious is pet stores but many businesses have become dog friendly in the past decade. You can see owners bringing their dogs to the bank, dry cleaners, and some clothing stores. Most dogs won’t be welcome in restaurants or food stores but our dogs are always welcomed at our insurance agency. When I drop by every month to pay my premium they always tell me to bring our dogs by so they can see how much they have grown. The dogs love to take these trips too.

If you decide to get a husky to live with you in an apartment just keep these things in mind and understand the commitment it will take to keep you and your dog happy. The companionship is worth every penny and people who own dogs live longer.
