3 Reasons to Use a Harness Instead of a Collar When Walking Your Husky

walking husky using a harnessTaking your Husky on regular walks is important for exercise, house training, and bonding. One thing that you’ll need to decide first, though, is whether you are going to use a collar or a harness when walking your dog. Even though both options can work, a harness is often the better choice. These are a few reasons why.

1. Prevent “Escapes”

If you’ve ever walked a dog that was a bit of an escape artist, you know that dogs can sometimes escape from their collars by twisting and turning their heads in a certain way. This can put your pet at risk of being hit by a car or otherwise injured, and it can open you up to liability issues. Plus, chasing your dog to try to put its collar back on probably isn’t your idea of a fun and relaxing walk. Chasing down a husky who thinks your play chase is even less fun out in public. Luckily, a harness is much more secure, making it much more difficult for your dog to “escape.”

2. Protect Your Dog’s Neck

Some dogs tug and pull at their leashes a lot when they’re being walked. A husky is very strong and can really pull hard. This is an issue that you’ll want to work with your dog on, but in the meantime, you have to think about how it can hurt its neck and throat from this behavior. A harness doesn’t put pressure on your dog’s neck and can be much safer, leaving your dog less prone to being injured.

3. Enjoy Better Control

Maintaining control of your dog when you’re walking is important, particularly when you’re out in public. Even though a leash and collar can provide some control, a harness provides better control of your pet. This is especially helpful if you have a large dog that you sometimes find hard to handle or an aggressive dog that you need to keep on a short and well-controlled leash.

Even though a collar is a quick and easy choice to use when walking your dog, a properly fitting harness can be a much better option. These are just a few reasons why you might want to buy a harness to use when you’re walking your furry family member.
